Attached is a capture of the last rehearsal on October 24, 2000, for a live performance at The Saint in Lower Manhattan, on or about October 27, 2000.
Safety In Numbers Festival, across several days and venues in New York City, featured electronic music in an experimental direction under the umbrellas of IDM, ambient, and related offshoots. My set was a visit into post-industrial alchemy and noise sculpture.
The musical tools and the premise for this live set developed in a context of rapid technological change. Real-time DSP performance of this kind on a general-purpose computer had only been possible for 3 or 4 years.
One of the venues got shut down mid-event. Slots at The Saint were shortened to 30 minutes to accommodate. The audience from the other venue landed at this little club, set up for listeners more than for spectators, which made a tight crowd. It was not possible to record the performance. Therefore, we have the last rehearsal at 45 minutes, as initially planned.
The piece uses 37 seconds of audio across 7 sound samples between 1 and 12 seconds long, each on its own stream. At root, granular synthesis is simple loop playback, where start and end are in motion, and the sound is folded over itself any number of times. This collapses into wavetable synthesis at the shortest lengths. In motion, this allows time- and pitch-based effects (flange, transposition, time-stretch), and all manner of sonic aeresolization.
On this powerful, moving experimental ambient record, samples are deconstructed and transformed in different ways on every track. Bandcamp New & Notable May 13, 2021
